Local information, accommodation and support

Hagen is a large town with 200.000 residents in Westphalia, Germany. There are good national and - via the train stations in Dortmund (20 minutes away), Cologne (45 minutes) and Frankfurt (2 hours) - international rail connections. The closest international airports are Dortmund (30 km), Düsseldorf (60 km), Cologne-Bonn (80 km) and Frankfurt (210 km).

Participants are lodged either at Hotel LEX in the city center or at the Bildungsherberge of FernUniversität, see also the map below.

Getting around:

Campus is at about 30-35 minutes walking distance from Hotel LEX and 15-20 minutes from the Bildungsherberge.

Bus line 515 connects the campus, the city center and the central train station. Between 5am and 9pm, the busses run in 15 minute intervals. Tickets can be bought from bus drivers, at the green ticket vending machines in the train station or online. A comprehensive explaination of the ticket system for local transportation would require an advanced degree in ticket science and is beyond the scope of a mathematical conference, so we just indicate some options: A single trip ("Preisstufe A1" - "Ticket category A1") costs 3,00€. There are also 4-trip-tickets (11,50€) and 10-trip tickets (24,30€). There are 24-hour and 48-hour tickets. If you feel brave, you can also try to understand and install the digital eezy-vrr app on your mobile phone which will calculate your fare according to the distance travelled and which might occasionally be the cheaper option.

Food:

When arriving on Sunday, please note that in Germany, supermarkets are closed on Sundays with very view exceptions (one of them being the "REWE To Go" in the central train station which has a basic range of products).

On campus, the university cafeteria ("Mensa") offers breakfast from 6:30 (price for a person roughly 3-5€) and lunch at noon (price for a regular dish about 6-8€ for guests). There are two daily vegetarian and one vegan option.

In the evening, the following restaurants are in walking distance from campus:

  • Restaurant HOEK im KLUB (direction). Changing menu. We chose it for the conference dinner. Opens at 4pm.
  • Restaurant Humpert am Hoeing (direction). German cuisine. Somewhat limited vegetarian options.
  • Pizzeria Pinocchio (direction). Standard pizzeria.

Apart from that, there are a variety of restaurants in the city center. Feel free to contact the organizers or local participants for advice.

Conference on "Geometric aspects of evolution and control" - first announcement

April 17 - 21, 2023

FernUniversität in Hagen, Germany

Dear colleague,

We are pleased to inform you that a conference on "Geometric aspects of evolution and control" will take place in Hagen (Germany) from April 17 to 21, 2017, at the campus of the FernUniversität, the largest state university in Germany.

This conference aims at bringing together, on the one hand, mathematicians from functional analysis, control theory, mathematical physics, dynamical systems, discrete mathematics, and stochastic analysis, and, on the other hand, researchers working in theoretical physics, machine learning, complex systems, and neuroscience.
It will follow the path of previous meetings on differential equations on networks and on operator theoretical methods for control theory that were held in the past years at different venues in Germany, including Bielefeld, Dortmund, and Hagen.

Hagen is a large town in Westphalia, Germany. There are good rail connections with the closest airports: Dortmund (30km), Düsseldorf (60 km), Köln-Bonn (80 km), and Frankfurt (210 km).

We will be able to cover the accommodation costs of a substantial number of junior participants. Additionally, a limited amount of funding is available to support the participation of a few senior researchers.

If you are interested in participating, please send us an e-mail by January 15, 2023 mentioning if you are interested in giving a talk and if you need financial support.

Yours sincerely,

Delio Mugnolo (University of Hagen: delio.mugnolo)
Matthias Täufer (University of Hagen: matthias.taeufer)

Conference on "Geometric aspects of evolution and control" - second announcement

April 17 - 21, 2023

FernUniversität in Hagen, Germany

Dear colleague,

This is the second announcement for the conference on "Geometric Aspects of Evolution and Control" that will take place in Hagen (Germany) from Monday, April 17 to Friday, April 21, 2023. The conference will start on Monday morning and end on Friday around noon.

The event aims at bringing together mathematicians from functional analysis, control theory, mathematical physics, dynamical systems, discrete mathematics, and stochastic analysis with appliers in theoretical physics, machine learning, complex systems, and neuroscience.

If you intend to give a talk, please send a title and an abstract to the organizers by the 1st of March 2023.

To stimulate discussions among participants, especially among young researchers, we will offer participants the opportunity to be grouped into teams of two. They will send each other the materials for their talk before the conference and will then kickstart the discussion after the talk of their partner, hopefully leading to deeper discussions and more meaningful scientific interactions. If you are interested in taking part in this experiment let us know when submitting your title and abstract.

You can find the current list of participants and further local information on the workshop page
